Financial Fitness Program: Connecting the World to Its Finances One House at a Time
“Increasing the understanding and use of financial services in low-income communities” has always been a key goal of Urban Financial Services Coalition. In response to the economic downturn and recession, we increased our emphasis on this objective by launching new programs to assist people better manage their finances and rescue their financial futures. Since our inception, our financial literacy program concentrated on low-income communities. Over the past couple of years, we realized it is just as important to provide financial fitness seminars to professionals impacted by corporate downsizing, 401K losses, increased unemployment and foreclosures. In meeting the global needs of this constituency, we leveraged new technology to reach beyond our network and educate people on fiscal responsibility beyond our geographic footprint.
February has traditionally been our Bankers Education Awareness Month, which made it the perfect time to launch our “Transformational Thursdays Financial Fitness Program” sponsored this year by U.S. Bank. This virtual program was marketed on the internet to various professional networking groups on LinkedIn and Facebook. The free tele-seminars were conducted by financial experts affiliated with UFSC and had over 400 participants. In addition, we distributed financial fitness and consumer alert information to a network of nearly 30,000. In April, we repeated the sessions as part of our financial literacy month programming. The interactive sessions were recorded and posted on our website (www.ufscnet.org). The speakers for “Transformational Thursdays Financial Fitness Program were:
- Brian Willis, founder and CEO of Wealth Builders Enterprises, Inc, presented on consumer credit education
- Maurice Wilson, founder and senior advisor of Wilson Wealth Management Group discussed methods to protect your 401k from heavy losses in the stock market
- Gail Perry-Mason, co-author of Girl Make Your Money Grow, discussed how parents should to teach their children about money principles
- Jennifer Matthews, owner of Creating Financial Literacy, LLC, discussed how to effectively manage your credit score.
- Melanie Lee, Esq., Attorney shared how to use estate planning to create generational wealth
- Max Williams, President/ CEO of Asset Management Group, discussed how to leverage real estate to create wealth
- Zaneilia A. Harris, President, Harris and Harris Wealth Management did a presentation on 401K options and how to effectively manage them.
In addition to the tele-seminars in February and April, UFSC chapters conducted in-person financial fitness workshops across North America. Here are just a few examples of chapter activities:
Highlights from the Saint Louis UFSC Interest Group – Aje Cunningham, President Our St. Louis Interest Group developed a financial literacy program titled the ‘ABCs of Money Management’. The program was offered to seventeen classes in seven high schools within the St Louis City Public School District. Topics were covered ranging from banking and credit to saving for college and retirement. St Louis Financial Services members along with St Louis City residents volunteered time to provide the courses during the student work day. Each student was provided with five manuals including detailed information, examples and problems to work and solve. We are pleased to announce that we have been asked to expand the program to be offered at all thirteen of the St. Louis City high schools! Wells Fargo Advisors and the Security Traders Association of St. Louis were proud sponsors of the ABCs of Money Management.
Highlights from the Charlotte Chapter – Maurice L. Wilson, President This year, the Charlotte Chapter held the annual small business workshop entitled “Never Laid Off! Taking your Business to the Next Level”. This workshop focused on giving experienced business owners an edge in the following areas: Social Media, Customer Service, and Raising Business Capital. Three members of UFSC Charlotte presented these subjects. In addition we invited successful entrepreneurs from the community to share how they took their business to the next level. We also conducted a fraud prevention workshop entitled “Trust but Verify! How to Avoid Getting Ripped Off by your Financial Advisor”. This workshop armed attendees with the tools and questions to vet their current or future financial advisor. Too often people take advisors at face value based on a friend’s recommendation – this is not enough. When dealing with life savings, it is important to be able to verify that your advisor is competent and legitimate. Johnson C. Smith University was a key partner in presenting the workshop.
Highlights from the Puget Sound Chapter – Lizzie L. Evans, President Our Puget Sound Chapter successfully kicked off the UFSC-PS and Tabor 100 Financial Fitness Program on February 26, 2010. Project LEAD, Tonnette Bufford, used the Case Management Program tools (FDIC On-line Adult Financial Literacy) which targeted first-time homebuyers. We wanted to focus on the “Hot” buyers market and tax credit stimulus, while providing basic money management tools to equip a pool of qualified facilitators to teach financial literacy going forward. We issued Operation Hope certificates of completion to 18 participants. One May 12, 2010, the chapter continued the UFSC Financial Fitness Program series with education targeting the youth. Scholarship & Mentoring Chair, Natasha de Sousa, led a team of facilitators in reaching middle and high schools teens. The UFSC r members further supported the training by raising awareness about other UFSC youth programs and activities at a vendor table. Operation Hope’s Banking On Our Future program was the primary tool used to teach the youth. The Puget Sound Chapter reached out to several community and corporate partners to ensure the program was successful including: Tabor 100, Regal Financial Bank, PSBIC, FDIC, Seattle Vocational Institute, Starbucks and Safeway.
Highlights from the Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter – Akilah S. Wallace, President Our Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter partnered with the Shared Housing Center Inc., which provides and facilitates affordable housing options in Dallas. Beginning in January and continuing once per month, the chapter facilitates an evening workshop with a group of transitional adults providing lectures and interactive discussions around topics of financial education. In addition to the adults, a simultaneous workshop is conducted for the attendees’ children on similar, yet age appropriate topics. The Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter is also providing support to the Financial Education Committee for the City of Dallas’ “Bank on Dallas” Program. The goals of “Bank on Dallas” are to: Increase the supply of starter accounts, Raise awareness of potential benefits from use of mainstream financial systems, Provide “second chance” accounts and Encourage financial education, savings and asset building. The objective of “Bank on Dallas” will be to generate 25,000 new accounts over a two year period, beginning January 2010. The Dallas Fort Worth Chapter is a community partner responsible for providing financial education for these future account holders so that they are equipped to maintain and manage their bank accounts. In addition, The Chapter facilitates a financial education workshop each Memorial Day Weekend at the Southern Sector YMCA Community Day. Corporate partners include JPMorgan Chase, Comerica Bank, BBVA Compass, Bank of Texas and the City of Dallas Office of Economic Development.
Highlights from the Richmond Chapter – Dexter C. Glass, Jr., President The Richmond Chapter completed the spring session of the Financial Literacy for Youth Program hosting financial education sessions at both John Marshall and George Wythe high schools. UFSC members and individuals from partnering organizations led the participating high school students through educational workshops about banking and financial services. The purpose of the program was to expose minority students to financial concepts and practices that would encourage them to become responsible stewards of their finances as they reach adulthood. In addition to the youth program, the Richmond Chapter kicked of the year in January with a Financial Education Series with a discussion on tax strategies. Participants learned strategies that could be implemented to help save more of their hard earned dollars. On March 6th, the Richmond Chapter partnered with Virginia Commonwealth University for their Metro Cash Assets fair. The event featured 18 local organizations; assisting individuals and families by offering a variety of financial literacy information. Participants were able to take advantage of free tax preparation services. Tax preparation and financial literacy was provided to over 40 individuals. The event helped return an estimated $42,800 in taxes and saved participants an estimated $10,000 in fees that they would otherwise have paid to proprietary tax preparers. Partners for the Richmond Chapter’s financial fitness program were: Risk Management Association, Wachovia, a Wells Fargo Company, Kirby & Associates PC, SunTrust Bank, Richmond Public Schools, Virginia Commonwealth University and Communities in Schools of Richmond.
Highlights from the Philadelphia Chapter – Telissa Lindsey, President This has been a great year for Financial Literacy in the Philadelphia Chapter. Seven members have completed the Operation Hope: Banking on your Future curriculum. The chapter has conducted 7 Financial Literacy workshops around the city of Philadelphia. These workshops have covered a wide variety of ages and events. The chapter is working with Operation Hope to develop a college curriculum for Lincoln and Cheyney Universities. They will be conducting workshops to a single elementary school in the fall. Partners for the Philadelphia Chapter are: Vanguard, University City High School, St. Joseph’s University, Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., Triumph Baptist Church, City Year, and St. Francis de Sales School
Highlights from the Las Vegas Chapter, Jackie Ingram, President The Nevada chapter worked in conjunction with the United Way of Southern Nevada to participate in the American Bankers Association (ABA) National Initiative “Teach Children To Save”
The chapter reached out to over (100) 3rd- 5th grade students. The students attended a low-to moderate Income (LMI) /At risk school within the community.
