Stronger Together: The Partnership Between Pathway Financial Education and Urban Financial Services Coalition

By LaTasha Jacobs, Executive Director, Pathway Financial Education

In the work of financial empowerment and economic equity, few things are more
powerful than strategic partnerships. When organizations with aligned missions and
complementary strengths come together, they create something greater than the sum of
their parts. This is the story of the growing partnership between Pathway Financial
Education and the Urban Financial Services Coalition Greater Kansas City Chapter, two
organizations united by a shared commitment to empowering underserved communities
through practical financial empowerment.
Two Organizations, One Mission
Pathway Financial Education was founded on the principles of access and mentorship,
having the mission to provide comprehensive financial training and education to high
school aged students, small business owners and individuals in underserved and under
resourced communities. Pathway believes that financial literacy is the bridge between
economic struggle and economic freedom, and we’re committed to making that
education accessible to everyone who needs it.
The Urban Financial Services Coalition, established in 1974, has a complementary but
equally vital mission: to provide professional development programs, support
educational advancement, and promote economic empowerment for minority
professionals in the financial services industry and the communities they serve. With
chapters across the United States, including right here in Greater Kansas City, UFSC
has built an extensive network of over 5,000 financial services professionals dedicated
to making a difference.
Both organizations understand a fundamental truth: economic empowerment isn’t just
about individual success, it’s about systemic change. It’s about creating pathways to
opportunity, breaking down barriers, and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their
background, has access to the resources and knowledge they need to build
generational wealth.
Why This Partnership Matters
The partnership between Pathway Financial Education and UFSC-GKC is built on the
recognition that our strengths complement each other perfectly. Pathway brings deep
expertise in financial education programming, curriculum development, and direct
community engagement. We’ve developed culturally tailored programs that resonate
with the communities we serve, addressing everything from basic budgeting and credit
repair to homeownership and small business development.
UFSC brings something equally valuable: a robust network of seasoned financial
services professionals who bring real-world expertise, mentorship, and industry
connections. Their members are bankers, financial advisors, accountants, and business
leaders. Professionals who understand the financial services industry from the inside
and can provide invaluable guidance to individuals and businesses trying to navigate it.
Together, we’re able to deliver financial education that’s not just theoretical, but
practical, actionable, and supported by professionals who can help participants
implement what they learn. This combination of education and professional mentorship
creates a multiplier effect, dramatically increasing the impact we can have on our
community.
Building the Partnership: A Journey of Collaboration
Like any meaningful partnership, ours didn’t happen overnight. It grew organically from
shared values, mutual respect, and a genuine desire to serve our community better
together than we could apart.
The relationship began with conversation and participation, getting to know each other’s
organizations, understanding each other’s missions, and identifying areas of alignment.
We quickly discovered that our organizations weren’t competitors; we were natural
collaborators. Where Pathway needed access to financial professionals who could
serve as volunteers and mentors, UFSC had a network of members looking for
meaningful ways to give back. Where UFSC wanted to deepen its community impact
through financial education initiatives, Pathway had the programming infrastructure and
community relationships already in place.
From those early conversations emerged a vision for partnership, one built on
collaboration, shared goals, and a commitment to excellence. We began exploring
opportunities to work together, from co-hosting financial education workshops to
connecting UFSC members with Pathway’s volunteer network.
Key Areas of Collaboration
Professional Volunteer Network
One of the most significant aspects of our partnership is the volunteer collaboration.
UFSC members bring expertise in banking, financial planning, accounting, and business
management, exactly the skillsets our community participants need. Through the
partnership, UFSC professionals volunteer as workshop facilitators, mentors, and
technical advisors, providing expert-led training that goes beyond basic financial literacy
to address real-world challenges to not only adult community members but those still in
High School as well.
Expanded Program Reach
By combining Pathway’s community relationships with UFSC’s professional network,
we’ve been able to expand the reach and impact of our programs. UFSC members help
us connect with businesses, community organizations, and individuals who might not
otherwise know about Pathway’s services. Meanwhile, Pathway provides UFSC
members with structured opportunities to engage in meaningful community service
aligned with their professional expertise.
Professional Development and Learning
The partnership isn’t just about serving the community; it’s also about professional
growth. UFSC members who volunteer with Pathway gain valuable experience in
financial education, community engagement, and nonprofit leadership. They develop
skills in areas like curriculum development, public speaking, and culturally responsive
teaching. This creates a win-win: the community gets access to highly qualified
professionals, and those professionals gain enriching experiences that enhance their
careers.
Addressing Systemic Barriers
Both organizations recognize that financial literacy alone isn’t enough, we must also
address the systemic barriers that prevent underserved communities from achieving
financial stability. Through our partnership, we’re working together to advocate for policy
changes, support Community Reinvestment Act compliance, and connect individuals
with resources that address housing, employment, and entrepreneurship challenges.
UFSC’s connections within the financial services industry complement Pathway’s
community-based approach, allowing us to work on both grassroots education and
systems-level change.
Impact and Outcomes
The partnership is already yielding measurable results. Since beginning our
collaboration, we’ve seen increased participation in Pathway’s programs, with more
individuals and small businesses accessing the financial education and mentorship they
need. UFSC volunteers have contributed many hours of expert guidance, helping
participants navigate everything from credit repair and debt management to business
planning and investment strategies.
More importantly, we’re seeing real changes in people’s lives. Participants are paying
down debt, improving their credit scores, opening savings accounts, starting
businesses, and purchasing homes. These aren’t just statistics, they’re families building
stability, entrepreneurs creating jobs, and individuals breaking cycles of financial
insecurity.
The partnership has also strengthened both organizations. Pathway has access to a
deeper pool of professional volunteers and industry expertise. UFSC-GKC members
have meaningful opportunities to live out the organization’s mission of economic
empowerment through direct community engagement.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Our Partnership
As we look to the future, we’re excited about the possibilities ahead. We’re exploring
new program offerings that leverage UFSC’s professional expertise, including
specialized workshops on topics like commercial banking, investment strategies, and
financial technology. We’re developing mentorship programs that pair UFSC members
with aspiring financial professionals from underserved communities, creating pathways
into the financial services industry.
We’re also committed to measuring and sharing our impact. By tracking program
outcomes and participant success stories, we can demonstrate the value of our
partnership and inspire other organizations to pursue similar collaborations. We believe
that the model we’re building by combining grassroots financial education with
professional mentorship which can be replicated in communities across the country.
Perhaps most importantly, we’re committed to maintaining the values that brought us
together: mutual respect, transparency, shared accountability, and an unwavering focus
on the communities we serve. We know that strong partnerships require ongoing
communication, flexibility, and a willingness to learn from each other. We’re committed
to fostering a relationship that continues to grow and evolve as our communities’ needs
change.
Lessons Learned: Building Effective Partnerships
Our partnership has taught us valuable lessons about what makes collaboration work:
Start with shared values. The strongest partnerships are built on common ground.
Before we discussed programs or logistics, we established that we shared a
commitment to economic equity, community empowerment, and excellence.
Identify complementary strengths. Effective partnerships aren’t about duplicating
each other’s work, but about bringing different assets to the table. We each contribute
what we do best, creating something neither organization could achieve alone.
Communicate openly and often. We maintain regular communication, sharing
updates, challenges, and successes. This keeps us aligned and allows us to adapt
quickly when circumstances change.
Focus on impact, not credit. Our partnership works because both organizations are
focused on serving the community, not on who gets recognition. When the mission is
bigger than any single organization, collaboration becomes natural.
Invest in relationships, not just programs. Beyond the formal initiatives, we’ve
invested in building genuine relationships between our team members and volunteers.
These personal connections strengthen our organizational partnership.
An Invitation to Join Us
The partnership between Pathway Financial Education and UFSC-GKC demonstrates
what’s possible when organizations work together with purpose and intentionality. But
our work is far from finished. The wealth gap persists. Too many families struggle with
financial insecurity. Too many small businesses lack access to capital and expertise.
That’s why we’re inviting others to join us, whether as partner organizations, volunteer
professionals, or community supporters. If you’re a financial services professional
looking to give back, consider volunteering with Pathway or joining UFSC. If you’re a
nonprofit or community organization working on economic empowerment, let’s explore
how we might collaborate. If you’re an individual or small business owner seeking
financial education and mentorship, we’re here to help.
Change happens when we work together. Economic equity becomes possible when
professionals use their expertise to serve. Communities transform when education
meets opportunity.
The partnership between Pathway Financial Education and the Urban Financial
Services Coalition Greater Kansas City Chapter is proof that collaboration works.
Together, we’re not just teaching financial literacy, we’re building pathways to economic
freedom, one person, one family, one business at a time.
And together, we’re creating a future where everyone in Kansas City has the
knowledge, resources, and support they need to achieve financial stability and build
generational wealth.
That’s a future worth working toward and we’re honored to do this work alongside
partners who share our vision.
