Urban Financial Services Coalition Mourns the Passing of Trailblazing Leader Kim D. Saunders

Remembering the legacy and contributions of Ms. Saunders in the financial services industry.

Urban Financial Services Coalition (UFSC), a 501c6 non-profit professional trade association dedicated to minority professionals in the financial services industry, deeply mourns the passing of Ms. Kim D. Saunders, former Eastern Region Vice-President of UFSC (formerly known as the National Association of Urban Bankers). Ms. Saunders, a trailblazing African American female banking executive, left an indelible mark on the financial sector through her relentless dedication to advancing the interests of minority financial professionals, minority banks, and communities of color. UFSC extends its heartfelt condolences to her husband, Barry, and her family during this difficult time.

With over 32 years of experience in the financial services industry, Ms. Kim D. Saunders epitomized leadership and acumen, inspiring generations of professionals. Throughout her illustrious career, she held significant leadership roles, including Immediate Past President of the National Bankers Association, President and CEO of Mechanics & Farmers Bank, and President & CEO of Consolidated Bank, among others. Her exceptional contributions and steadfast support were evident in multiple markets, including Richmond, Virginia, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Washington, DC.

“Ms. Saunders was more than a beautiful face; she was a trailblazing leader with the acumen, talent, and capability to be successful in the financial services industry. She is and will continue to be an inspiring example of what is possible if we are willing to use our time, talent, and treasure for the benefit of others. She will be missed,” said Ditu Kasuyi, President of the Advisory Board Urban Financial Services Coalition.

Her dedication to nurturing the next generation of professionals was unparalleled, as she made time amidst her busy schedule to mentor junior members and share her wisdom and business acumen with the organization’s leaders. Ms. Saunders’ passion for financial inclusion and empowering minority financial professionals, particularly African American women in the industry, was evident in every aspect of her work.

As a testament to her visionary leadership, Ms. Saunders dreamt of creating a fund to provide capital to minority banks, and she saw that dream become a reality by co-founding the MDI Keeper’s Fund L.P. Through her invaluable contributions, she served as a council member to federal bank regulators and a senior advisor to the Milken Institute, further solidifying her impact on the financial sector.

Her legacy will continue to resonate through the Urban Financial Services Coalition’s commitment to advancing the cause she passionately championed. The organization will carry forward her mission to empower minority financial professionals and uplift communities most overlooked in the financial services industry. Ms. Kim D. Saunders’ memory will forever serve as a guiding light in pursuing financial inclusion and prosperity for all.
