The African American Briefing for Financial Professionals (AABFP) is an opportunity for leaders of Urban Financial Services Coalition to learn from lawmakers, regulators and government leaders on what strategies they are creating to create jobs, grow businesses and revitalize communities. It is also an opportunity for leaders to learn how they can be a resource to overcome the challenges facing the financial services industry.
UFSC is collaborating with the American Bankers Association (ABA) Government Relations Summit for portions of the program. During the registration process, if an attendee selects a collaborated activity, then UFSC will register attendee for those events and attendee will receive a confirmation from American Bankers Association.

Schedule of Activities

General Sessions: Attendees will hear from a variety of subject matter experts on topics that impact the financial services industry and community of colors.
Capitol Hill Briefing: Urban Financial Services Coalition has invited members of the Congressional Caucus, House Committee on Financial Services and Governmental Leaders to discuss key concerns in the financial services industry and their impact on communities of color.
Capitol Hill Visits: UFSC Members will visit members of Congress to advocate for change in the financial services industry. Visits will be based upon the state individuals lives in and the company or organization the individuals work for.
Emerging Leaders Program: This is a special session for financial professionals that are new or in the early stages of their career in financial services industry. UFSC is collaborating with the American Bankers Association to ensure that this segment of minority financial professional get the opportunity to share challenges and strategies, network with their peers from across the country and gain new perspectives on leadership. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in roundtable discussions, hear from a congressional panel, plus other keynote speakers. (Open to financial professionals who are employed by financial institution…banks and insurance companies and etc.)
Networking Dinner at Georgia Brown’s: Georgia Brown’s restaurant is a Washington D.C. favorite for visitors and natives of the Washington D.C. Chef Bryan Yearly, Georgia Brown’s Executive Chief, brings the together the cooking influences of Africans, the French Huguenots and the Sephardic Jews from Portugal and Spain to provide attendees a uniquely diverse and history rich southern cuisines to enjoy while networking. **Attendees are responsible for their own transportation to dinner and the cost of dinner.**
Senior Leaders Networking Reception at Marriott Marquis: CEO and senior level banking professionals from across the country to participate in the African American Briefing for Financial Professionals and the ABA Government Relations Summit to share perspectives, building new relations and talk a little shop in a relaxed environment. Women’s Leadership Forum: The annual Forum, held in conjunction with the American Bankers Association Government Relations Summit, is an opportunity to network with CEO and senior level banking peers while hearing the latest on issues that could affect the way you do business in the financial services industry.

Victoria Arlen
Victoria Arlen – Paralympic Gold & Silver Swimmer, ESPN Host Reporter, & Dancing with the Stars Contestant. Ms. Arlene is a remarkable young woman who has endured, and overcome, more challenges in her 24 years than most of us will see in a lifetime, perhaps many lifetimes. After being diagnosed with a devastating illness that nearly took her life and left her paralyzed for a decade, she defied all odds. Literally locked within her own body for years, she shares how gratitude, perspective, hope, and relentless hard work brought her back to life, becoming a gold and silver Paralympian, one of the youngest on-air hosts hired by ESPN, and Dancing with the Stars contestant.
Congress Member Karen Bass
Congressmember Karen Bass was re-elected to her fourth term representing the 37th Congressional District in November 2016. Congressmember Bass serves on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs where she is Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations. As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, Congressmember Bass is also working to craft sound criminal justice reforms as well as protect intellectual property right infringements that threaten the economic health of the 37th District.
She was selected by Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi to serve on the prestigious Steering and Policy Committee, which sets the policy direction of the Democratic Caucus, as Organization, Study and Review Chair. Congressmember Bass is also playing a leadership role in the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), where she serves as 2nd Vice-Chair for the 115th Congress.
Dan Garcia-Diaz
Dan Garcia-Diaz is a Director in the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s Financial Markets and Community Investment team. Mr. Garcia-Diaz leads a range of reviews in the housing, community development, and insurance issue areas. Specifically, his recent work examined cost trends in the Housing Choice Voucher program, oversight of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, housing needs of persons with HIV, performance management in Treasury’s small business lending programs, and collateral policies of the Federal Home Loan Bank System.
Congress Member Blaine Luetkemeyer
As the Congressman from the 3rd Congressional District of Missouri, Blaine is committed to representing the interests of the hard-working people by being a strong voice for them in Washington, D.C. Blaine, 64, represents the 13 counties that make up the 3rd Congressional District of Missouri. Blaine, a native of St. Elizabeth, Mo., has lived in the district with his family for four generations and he operates a 160-acre farm there. Along with his strong agriculture background, he was also a small businessman, having been in the banking and insurance business. Blaine has also served as a bank regulator for the state of Missouri earlier in his career.

Congress Member Kevin McCarthy

Joseph M. Otting
Joseph M. Otting was sworn in as the 31st Comptroller of the Currency on November 27, 2017. The Comptroller of the Currency is the administrator of the federal banking system and chief officer of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OCC supervises nearly 1,400 national banks, federal savings associations, and federal branches and agencies of foreign banks operating in the United States. The mission of the OCC is to ensure that national banks and federal savings associations operate in a safe and sound manner, provide fair access to financial services, treat customers fairly, and comply with applicable laws and regulations. Prior to becoming Comptroller of the Currency, Mr. Otting was an executive in the banking industry. He served as President of CIT Bank and Co-President of CIT Group from August 2015 to December 2015.
